Seafood Buffet at Intercontinental hotel, Hong Kong

April 29, 2007

Intercontinental Hotel seafood buffet.  Wow, this could just about be the best buffet ever, even beating the Bellagio buffet.  Amazingly fresh scallops, smoked salmon, tuna, lobster, prawns and sushi are on offer.  Fantastic salads – and it gets better as there are all the usual carvery and roasts to accompany.  Chicken curry is available and a whole range of international foods.  Deserts incredible – French cakes, chocolate cakes etc. all made to the highest standard.  The breakfast buffet also is incredible, with no less than 8 fruit juices.  Intercontinental hotel definitely has the best breakfast/evening buffet in the world – but be warned, evening buffet starts in at around $70.

Nobu, Intercontinental hotel, Hong Kong

April 27, 2007

Nobu in Hong Kong, Intercontinental hotel is almost a chinese tapas experience.  Fantastic service and harbour views combined with a choice of chicken, beef or seafood.  You may have chicken skewers, tempura or whatever, in however much quantity you desire.  Salads are fantastically different – try par boiled peas with sea salt, simple but outstanding.  I opted for beef tenderloin skewers, scallop and prawn tempura.  Boiled rice to accompany, just simple and low-ish in fat, fresh fresh fresh food served in an excellent setting.   Nobu is excellent for those who want a little food or a lot of food, with an oriental twist but simple.  And those who want to watch their waistline.  9/10 – would definitely go back, although a little expensive at arounf 60 gbp / $120 per head

Spoon in Hong Kong Intercontinental hotel

April 23, 2007

Spoon – Intercontinental hotel Hong Kong.

Reputed as the in the top 100 restaurants worldwide, I was expecting 6 star cuisine.  On entry all the staff, including the manager and head chef greeted us in person.  Views over look the Hong Kong harbour in fantastic splendor.  The menu is limited – starter, pasta course, meat course and desert or choose from 6-8 course special.  I chose the scallop salad starter which was very good, although the scallops were served at room temp, I assume to match the temp of the fruit condiment which it came with – I didn’t think this worked very well as the strong flavours of apple and raisin definitely drowned the delicate aroma of the scallops.  The scallops were perfectly cooked however.  We skipped the pasta course and moved directly to the meat – my sea bass was skinless but slightly under cooked and my wifes tenderloin was absolutely perfect.  The fries that come with them were arranged in a sort of Lego-land fashion but be warned, you only get 4.  Yes, 4 fries.  To follow we had a desert – I choose the cheesecake which was the heavy style cheesecake, very pleasant.  My wife had the Black is Black chocolate desert which comprises of a mouse, chocolate surround with melted chocolate inside and crunched up chocolate biscuit….very rich.  I’m not sure what Spoon are trying to do – individually each course has it merits, but together it goes against the grain of cordon bleu restaurants.  The mean was expensive at around 140 UK / $280 US for 2 persons.  As pleasant as it was, I would not go back.

Shenaz, the best restaurant in the world?

April 11, 2007

Est.1969 this is prob. the best restaurant I’ve ever ate at.  Indian cuisine at it’s finests, away from the main stream.

I’ve been eating at Shenaz for 25 years.  You’ll see it’s awesome following on special occasions such as Valentines day and mothers day where seats are no existent.

Currys sauces are prepared for up to 8 hours before hand with intense labourous cooking methods.

Essentially the Shenaz does some amazing dishes and some mediocre ones.  I recommend

- vegetable pakora (just amazing), nan bread, chapati and the other pakoras.

- Special beef or chicken

- chicken tikka

- chicken chasni

This is definitely the best curry-house in the Western world and even rivals Indian eateries.  Just phenomenal.

The best restaurant experience – 360 Restaurant

April 5, 2007

This is just about the most amazing ‘experience’ in a restaurant.

The CN Tower in Toronto is amazing anyway, but the 360 Restaurant is the cherry on the cake.

It’s essential to book the 360 Restaurant for sure, prob. a week or two in advance preferably.  We booked for 7PM but they could not guarantee a window seat.

When we arrived you tell the staff you’re eating in the 360 Restaurant and that bypasses any entrance fee – after your meal you get to explore the CN Tower free of charge.

We went to the restaurant where we were shown a non-window seat, we asked if we could get one, they said wait an hour.  So we did – and it was worth it.  You can spend an hour downstairs at the cafe looking at the boats and planes landing on the nearby air strip.

We were shown to our table at 8pm.  The view changes slowly as you rotate ‘360′, but you would not notice.  It does not make you sick or anything like that.  You just look down at your food, look up and the scenery has changed again over-looking Toronto.

The menu is fairly normal food, but done to a high standard.  I ordered fillet steak and lobster – I had no idea how to eat lobster so I asked for the meat to be removed from the claws etc.  This was no problem which again is the tribute to the service at 360 Restaurant.  The food is 9/10, excellently cooked and prepared.

We spent as long as possible on our meal, taking nearly 2.5 hours.  That seemed no problem for the staff (it was a weekday).  We eventually watched the sun set and nightime fall over Toronto – amazing!

Deserts are great, I’d recommend the cheesecake.  Lovely and light, fantastic flavour and texture.

It is difficult to take photos at night because of the glass reflecting, so would advise to take pics during daylight.  Also some woman dropped her bag between the rotating glass and her chair, it jammed.  Just a word of warning, don’t be stoopid!  The noise levels are quite high as it’s noisey Canadians talking loudly, more like being in a bar but looking like a restaurant.

Basically, you haven’t lived till you’ve tried 360 Restaurant - I’m thinking of going to Toronto again just for the restaurant!
